have you got a rev counter? It's common among MK3's, all you have to do is change the idle point so it idles a bit higher.
To do this you need to tighten or loosen ( I can't remember which way round) a screw on the inlet manifold, i have a picture somewhere but my hosting is playin up

The cutting out is probably caused by a clogged ISV, or a faulty blue temp sender. Mine had this problem, so I replaced the blue sender and it cut out less frequently. I then cleaned the ISV and treated my car to some injector cleaner and the problem went away.

The buzzing noise is probably coming from the indicator relay (under the dash on the passenger side), but the problem may be in the switch. Next time it makes a noise, try pushing the indicator stalk down firmly. Mine does the same, I keep meaning to fix it properly but life gets in the way.

ooh wierd.... mine's messed up in the left indicator department too.. thought it was a unique problem :) maybe we can get VW to instigate a recall
(bit of a bugger - you can't tell if it's properly engaged when the stereo's on without checking the dash light's flashing)

facetiousness:
1. you are remembering to put the clutch down when stopping right? :D
2. i'd like to lower the idle point if i can rather than higher if anyone can find the relevant thing to twiddle ;) slightly more efficiency.

I had the same problem with my car cutting out at the end of my road when I was slowing down and had the clutch all the way down. I took it into the garge and they tweeked a few things but it still happened.

I then spoke so a VW mechanic who lives across the road for me, he didn't have any ideas apat from changeing the petrol from supermarkets to Essco, he said it many make it run a bit better, but I solved the problem. That was untill I move home and tryed BP which was worse it went back to cutting out and I had now power when pulling away, changed back to Essco, once I found a garage and it runs like a dream again.
