Dipped Beam *Fault*

basically, i was out on night driving and my dipped beam lights cut out (both sides) because both cut out i assumed it was to do with the fuses. i had the right ones checked and replaced. still the same problem.
Being a novice i had to tke it to my cousin who knows a lil more than me but hes a bit of a cowboy. he mentioned that there was no live coming through, or summin along those lines.
eventually we somehow blew the whole right sides lights (except the indicators) so got the lights working b relaying from the left handside.
Now my cousin and his colleague said that it could either be just the switch has gone, or it could be a fault in the body control unit ?!?!??
Just wanted to know if this is a common fault, if it has happened to anyone else and what i can do to fix the problem
Thanks guys, Chris :]
