I have a 9n 1.4 TDi.

I keep getting this metal clang seems to come from under the car. It sometimes comes from the front or what seems like the middle of the car.

It doesn’t happen all the time but recently it’s been getting worse and happens most of the time.

It occurs when I start the car, when accelerating from a stand still and when I lift my foot off the accelerator as I’m driving.

I’ve asked the local garage a while back to try and diagnose it but it was not as bad then, its recently got way worse. I’ve had a look around and can’t seem to diagnose the problem myself.

Anyone else had similar issue?

Anybody know what it might be?

Could be wishbone bushes or the bottom engine mount.

Check the front coil springs too. Mine snapped with less than 30k miles on the car. Not that uncommon...

I have had them replaced with brand new VW ones 3 months ago.

Had the passenger side replaced a year ago, replaced the whole leg.
But I might investigate the springs again just to see if theres something else wrong there.

Have checked the springs and they are all fine.

Seems to be something else as the noise occurs when you start the car also.

Engine mounts?

That was my initial thought, it seems to come from the bottom of the car so I think it could be the one holding the gearbox.

I will need to get it on the ramp again and have a look at it, as I have not had a chance to get it on a ramp for a while.

I have a similar issue with my 9N3 GTi, doesn't happen when you start (and practically disappears when you put cruise control on ) but mine is more like a clicking metal noise. Happens when I lift my foot on the acc, over bumps and also if you press the brake then let off. Idea's?

Bushes prob mate

Got poly bushes in there recently fitted :-S

Think I've diagnosed mine, front right lower CV joint. Will make a clicking noise first, then a whiring noise and eventually you'll lose all drive to that wheel as it spins inside itself.

I also have a similar issue with my polo 1.4 tdi. Cars been to a couple of mechanics who can not find a fix. It's a constant clicking noise when the car is started, and upon revving the car the noise disappears, bushes have been changed. The noise comes from the drivers side underneath the car. I reckon it's the fan belt tensioner or some sort of tensioner which makes this metal tick tick noise. Is this a similar issue you having to mate?

Try your lower wishbone ball joints. Jack the car up with the wheel clear off the ground. Hit the tyre on the inside of the wheel see if the noise is there then its your bottom ball joint. £20 and a hours labour. So £70 at a dealer dependant on the rates or fix it your self.

Mine turned out to be the water pump failing.Yesterday it was making some horrible noise when starting.. Got the car towed to a local mechanic which he removed the cambelt cover and he was able to see the water pumps pieces and the belt shredded. Luckily the cambelt never snapped or neither did the timing mess up otherwise that would have been a serious expenditure! So the help of me not turning the key really helped
