Mine was grinding between gears, stiffness when changing, whining while accelerating and was loudest decelerating. Don't think mine was ever jumpy though. The whining is the most obvious clue I think.

Do you let the car warm up for 5 or 10 minutes in the morning? Always a good thing to do because it lets the gearbox oil warm up, if you drive it straight from cold the gearbox feels really stiff, especially when trying to get it into reverse. Letting the car warm up properly is a good way to look after the gearbox and I don’t just mean on cold winter mornings, everyday give it 5 minutes before you set off.

As for the gearbox faults early signs look out for are whines and crunches, 4th & 5th gear was the worst when my box was going.
Clutch may be at fault too, watch out for slipping and see if the biting point is very high.

Mine went on the motorway I noticed 5 gear was wrong whiring, took the slip road off luckily the slip
Road I needed to get home stopped at traffic lights and got stuck in 2nd like it literally would not move my step dads dad is a gearbox engineer he had a look and said I'd basically torn it to s**t so he replaced a few components and it's been fine ever since.

Letting the car warm up for 5 or 10 mins is not a good idea. You will increase cylinder wear through bore wash aswell as wasting fuel too.

Not a good idea? That's ridiculous

Running a car from cold will cause a lot more issues than a warm engine
VTEC engines rev at 2K when first started to allow the engine to get up to temp faster, after 2 to 3 mins they then drop to 1K.

Cars use very little fuel when idling so that's not really an issue unless you’re using an old car with manual choke
Bore wash is only an issue for cars that have been heavily modified or the ECU has been mapped incorrectly, doesn’t affect standard cars at all.

Some1 has been given incorrect info I feel, warming up the car is a must. Even for a minute or two...

oh dear!

im a marine engineer (inland) and see it all the time. admittidley on diesels however the principle is the same on petrol.

engines need putting under load (albeit gently) as soon as possible to force the rings against the bores otherwise its a fact that you will increase bore wear.

its not info ive been given, its from experience over 5 years.

If your so clever and clued up surely you don't need us no nothings to tell a marine engineer whats up with your box.

You should know more than us surly, but every single person i Know who is into cars and I work on rolls Royce and bentleys all day say run a car up til warm then drive on. Driving cold will do harm...... This is fact.!

Hope you figure it out.

You are correct. I don't need telling what's wrong with my box as I'm not the original poster!

You're obviously not prepared to accept fact and I'm not going to argue when I know the facts.

Marine engineer or not its common knowledge that a car should be warmed up for a couple of mins before setting off, your right in the fact that its not always neccesary but it certainly doesnt do the car any harm at all. Performance cars in particular should never be run from cold, especially turbocharged cars because it can damage the turbo and other components.

Everybody knows driving the car rather than let it idle will get the engine up to temperature much quicker but letting the car warm up for a few mins is fine, if your leaving it 15-20 mins every morning then yeah over time you may cause a problem because the car runs richer when idling but for a couple of minutes in the morning its absolutely fine.
What are you supposed to do in the winter when its -10 and every window is like a sheet of ice? I think you would struggle to find anyone who just gets in the car and drives straight off, if they did you would probably have to question their mental health.

Woah!! come on to check my post find the start of ww3 Lol, tried reversing the car as on my parents drive the other day and just kept popping out of gear. def think its gearbox problem so looking for a recond one.
Also how does warming up the engine also warm up the gearbox oil as the gear box only is used when driving?!?

The heat of the engine will warm up the gearbox, its always a good thing to do because the Polo GTI gearboxes are awful when cold.
Selecting reverse is the worst when its cold, I used to go through the gears first before selecting reverse because it never liked going in first time.
