Right then, I've done the K&N Typhoon kit and now it's time to sort out the manifold & exhaust
I don't know a great deal about what way to go on this but I do know I want the greatest gains possible.
I've had a quote for a custom fabricated manifold & exhaust but the guy said a manifold 'off the shelf' would be just as good.
I'm gonna get a custom exhaust anyway because I want it de-cat but could do with some advice on the manifold issue really - the chap also said an upgrade vs the standard manifold wont make much difference on the GTI.

Any comments & advice from those that have changed their manifold and exhaust would be greatly received!

The standard Manifold on the GTI is actually very good which is why aftermarket manifolds dont tend to give very big gains.
In terms of "off the shelf" parts you are pretty limited with the GTI as you are probably already aware, the only after market exhaust manifold still being made for the GTI (that i'm aware of) is the Raceland 4-2-1 which is around the £240 mark.

This does need slightly modifying for a correct fitment as it fits several different models of Polo including the 1.4 8V, 16V and 1.6 GTI.
Its been known to give gains of between 2-3 bhp on its own and with a de-cat you could maybe get up to 7-8.

As far as the prep work goes the two items I have labelled in the picture are not necessary for the GTI so have to be removed, they are only used for the 1.4 16V Polo's so need to be removed. The holes where it bolts to the block also have to be re-bored by a couple of mm because they are slightly too small.



The Manifold doesn’t come with a gasket either so you will need to buy one of them from Volkswagen or GFS, TPS etc, the original GTI gasket fits fine.

The Stainless small pipe you can see in the pics comes with the manifold and it needs to be welded to the CAT, either that or get a custom de-cat pipe fabricated.

Have a look at the Kam Racing manifold that they produced for the Lupo GTI, unfortunately its not available for the Polo due to fitment issues and demand but if you could get something similar custom made for the Polo then you might be on to a winner.
I think the 4-1 is a better design and tends to give better figures than a 4-2-1

With the gains being minimal on the manifold I'm thinking maybe stay put with the factory one and just get a custom de cat exhaust, then spending the saved cash on a remap?

Anyone got a typhoon K&N along with a de cat then had a remap, if so what bhp did you achieve?

I would expect around 135-138 bhp with the modifications you mentioned

Stainless exhaust system, De-Cat, Typhoon Induction Kit and Re-map should see you close to 140, maybe with a custom or raceland manifold you would see over 140. Craig got nearly 147bhp and that was with a Raceland 4-2-1, de-cat, stainless exhaust, Typhoon and AMD Remap

If you want a de-cat section then you will most likely need to get one custom made as I dont remember seeing any cat-back systems for the GTI that give you the option of a De-cat.

Your best buying a raceland first and then measuring up the exhaust flange to give you the diameter, then look into getting a custom de-cat section knocked up. Alternatively you could retain the catalyst and just weld the additional section from the raceland into the cat.

As said I have all you want fitted and believe me it's all about the manifold. Iv known ppl to fit just decats onto standard manfold and then have it mapped with a bmc cda and they only get 140bhp if that. With my manifold on it gives me near on 10bhp more as I run 148bhp on mine after a remap with no lambda sensors working. They said if I had them working then I'd get over 150bhp but I'm happy with how she runs....

Its not to difficult to get it fitted. I just drilled out the hopes by another 2mm and that gives you room to play with...

Very hard to drill as it's stainless and thick but worth it....

You will destroy lambda sensors though as you run more fuel and burn them out I been told... So I had mine mapped out....

How do you access the classified section on ED38? All I can see is the traders section but on the homepage it doesnt feature the classifieds

Thanks for the heads up on that Trotta, top effort there mate I rung the chap but unfortunately he had sold it a couple of weeks back so I'm still on the look out for a manifold and a de cat exhaust if anyone knows anything. The edition chap has still got the induction kit for the gti if anyone wants it, fairly priced too so it is.

To access the classifieds you have to sign up to the site and then make at least one posting before the classifieds appear, took me a wile to find that out! Also, after you've posted Trotta's link will work too

Manifold, and catback exhuast - £120!

Also got a cammed engine for £300. It's the guy I got my brakes off of. I'd have gone for them if I weren't looking at changing the engine in the summer.
