Hello.

First an apology for my lack of knowledge and for posting what I assume a fairly basic question - you guys are the experts so I figured it worth asking before either creating a problem myself or spending way more than necessary in a garage...

Basically one of the dipped headlight bulbs in my 2007 9n3 Polo has blown as they occasionally tend to do, so obviously needs replaced - for the quick question, is this a user replaceable part?

The manual gives a very simplified explanation, but also tells you to take it to an official technician, and from what I can gather replacing a bulb can vary from incredibly easy to virtually impossible depending on your car model and skill level. I will be the first to admit I am not really particularly skilled or knowledgeable in this area (hence the post here) beyond the basics like swapping a wheel and checking the various fluid levels, though like to think myself moderately capable with the correct knowledge. Is the average person like me going to be able to swap out the bulb without too much swearing and disassembly, or is it worth taking it to my local garage and asking for their help? Following on from that, if it is doable, how? Searching the internet (and this forum) hasn't seemed to bring up too much of relevance given the huge variety of different models, and the only specific guide I came across has dead links for the pictures that used to be the main part of said guide...

So any opinions on here I stand? Doable by your everyday man or worth a trip to the garage?

For starters you posted this in the wrong section, but anywhoo, you should be able to change the bulbs yourself. Remove the headlight bulb cap and there should be a clip inside. Its not too hard buddy. provided the fact that you have small fingers. Some people on here just find it easier to remove the front bumper and then remove the headlight etc . (This is all based on experience from the 9n).

As an update, after popping the bonnet and following what was mentioned here and elsewhere, it is actually a rather easy and simple process here - I think I mostly got scared off after watching a friend dismantle half the engine compartment to get to the bulbs and spending an age trying to get everything fitted back together again.

The only problem is that inbetween having a look at the bulb, and buying a spare and fitting it I managed to screw up putting on the rubber cap over the back of the light, so will have to source another one of those...

The best thing to do is probably to take a look and see if you can work out how it fits. You need to remove the rubber cap over the rear of the dipped light and then I believe that it's an anticlockwise turn to unlock the bulb, which can then be pulled from the headlight. The hardest part that I remember is that it can be a bit tricky, given the angle, to get the bulb locked back into place.

I think that, going by the internet, changing bulbs appears to be one of the most difficult tasks ever invented. Some threads certainly seem to make it appear to be harder than it is. The problem with the manual is that the diagrams aren't particularly detailed, so you need to use them almost as 'aids' and not as a 'guide.' It's a lot easier than it sounds.

Simply put, if you can get the old bulb out then you can get the new one in. You can always look through the lens to see if the bulb is lined up properly etc. You shouldn't need to remove the headlamp unit either to get at it. What engine have you got?
