Audio Upgrades

Hey guys,

After my long running oil usage issues I'm happy to say that the GTi has been running fine for a couple of months now and using hardly any oil. So for my first bit of work I'm looking to upgrade the Stereo/Speakers.

I've got a RCD510 with DAB at the moment and was wondering what sort of upgrades people have already done? Is it worth doing the speakers or better off looking at a better headunit (I've been told that the RCD510 is supposed to be pretty decent though!)

I upgraded from the basic RCD310 to the latest RNS510 (at the time version F). Added bluetooth and voice recognition and it is great. It had a hard drive to download songs onto and the rear parking sensors, MFSW, iPod etc all work perfectly. The speakers could do with uprating, especially the bass as it is a bit thin on the OEM speakers.
An after market head unit will give you more options and the sound should be louder as most of them are 4x50w or 4x60w units, whereas the VW units are 4x20w.
I love my sounds and always hanker for the Quality I had in the Lexus I had - 14 speakers with a subwoofer and a Mark Levinson tuned surround sound set-up 8)

My Golf was good too as it had a Kenwood DNX7200 head unit, Hertz Hi-energy components up from Hertz Coax speakers in the rear with an Audison 4 way amp and 10" sub built into the rear arch. Now that had a fair whack of sub!

I'm used to having the same sort of quality as well and sadly the polo doesn't quite live up to expectations. Only thing that would put me off switching to a double DIN after market headunit would be the loss of integration with the electronic bits of the car. If there's an RCA feed from the headunit I could always put an amp in line somewhere.
