Well, it looks like a micro switch, so, I'd guess it is the switch from the bonnet lock that provides various functions including protecting the under bonnet area from "break-in" (alarm) allows the low oil light to get reset if the oil level is topped up and does something to the operation of the wipers I think. So, I think that you should try to refit it if it was originally plugged into the car wiring - and not just an old replaced one that was still lying about.

Thanks it was plugged into the wiring loom but the micro switch end was just hanging down and not attached to anything I will have a look to see if it could connect to bonnet or inner wing

I'd reckon that it should end up getting fixed to the bonnet lock assembly some how, plug it back in and plug in the cable support and see where that takes this bit to - I'd guess very near the centre of the lock carrier area. I could look up my parts list and Haynes book to see if it smentioned any where if you need me to.

Right, I've had a look at my wife's car, and, this lump plugs in to the lock carrier, support clips into lock carrier, and the unit get fixed to the lock module it seems - but how that is done I can not say. So, I suggest that you remove the front grill - 2-off Torx screws > use screw drivers to "close up a bit" each of the top clips while prising up the centre area of the grill, do this to both sides and after the top is fully unclipped, maybe "help" the ends of the grill out of where the Torx screws were, now all you do is ease the grill forward and pull up out of the 4-off lower mounting clips. Now you can maybe see a bit more - or remove this lock assembly's securing screws (looks like 2-off) and have a look under the lock assembly and try to fix this switch back onto it. Good luck!
