Yes it's possible.

I queried it at my dealer a while back and the techy told me the aerial is merely for aesthetics, the real antenna is in the rear window. I removed my aerial stalk and ran without it for a few weeks and not once did I find any decrease in reception. So, you could possibly fit one of the 'Dummy' antenna's VW/Audi supply on a variety of their cars - Scirocco, TT etc.

Or, you can buy a full working shark fin antenna and fit this but it's a bit of a fiddly job and requires fannying about with the roof lining. If your up for that mate then crack on... 8)

So is there a wire going to the roof aerial? It,s strange as at work some of the staff cars are golf bluemotions. And have no roof aerials. Why put a non functioning aerial on the roof? :? :?

I agree, very strange. And if they say it's for aesthetics then I don't understand it either, looks miles better with no aerial imo!

I think its to appeal to young drivers and also a design throw back to hot hatches of the 90s?
Things may have moved on now of course for some but i like it.
Reminds me of my mark 2 16v.

See what you find guys. I only use the radio on a morning but my signal went uninterupted when I took my aerial off for over 2 weeks!

Is it possible to remove the base unit without removing the roof lining though?
Or do you have to do that as well, cos that looks really difficult :?

It's screwed in on the underside of the roof so to unscrew it you have to take the lining down! I was really keen on this until I found out what work was involved and then I soon got over the idea

Urghhhh. Why oh WHY did they put the stupid thing on in the first place :(

I wonder how much VW would charge to change it themselves....

I can't imagine it would be a lot. The parts topside are £40 and it would be less than half an hours work for a trained technician. Realistically i'd guess at somewhere between £90 and £120 which is a lot for a dummy aerial
