AVY and ARC engines have a different gearbox with EDL (electronic differential lock)

They also use a larger clutch.

These are not compatible with other polo engines.

So, just to confirm, I couldn't use my ARC gearbox on an AFH engine then?

Or would it work if I took the GTI flywheel/clutch over too? I don't care for the EDL much though, never seems to do anything anyway!

Correct

It has larger driveshafts also plus the ratios are quite different.

Cheers, I'll be getting the entire car so can swap drive shafts etc around as needed. (My engine has failed (but clutch/gearbox are fine, so I found a cheap 6n 16v I'm going to put into the GTi instead, except the donor gearbox is dead so would need to retain my own.)

That was a correct on the likely basis it won't work by the way :P

Hey man, any luck? if you were going to the trouble of buying a non running donor car, then what about getting an engine instead? Dare i say it? erm... ebay seems to have a few going at the mo, one on 78k for £475, 90 day warranty too apparently. Hope thats not too unwelcome as suggestions go, just trying to return a favour for the help you gave me! (Sorry no link to motor, im a bit computer pants) All the best!

No that's fine - the help is appreciated :) Sorry I never got back to your last set of issues, I've been pretty bush recently with uni etc. No luck yet, missed out on the car by £5!

I've seen those engines, but I'm looking to fix it as cheaply as possible, and if possible make it a bit different (hence the AFH, so I could bike carb it up rather than spending all that money for something with no 'special' features). My main reason is I was going to sell it, but then this happened, and the more I spend on fixing it, the less I get back (obviously). The Polo I was after sold for £230, for the entire car - less than half the cost of a GTi engine, plus I could break it for parts too.

I've also not been paid since I finished my uni placement in August, haven't had any student finance (and when I do it's literally less than £230 to last 4 months - fat chance!) and won't get paid for the work I'm doing now for a while yet either, hence the need for cheap if possible as I'm running low on funds! On the plus side, my dad has offered to take the head off mine and have a look, so hopefully it's just a failed valve or something (all our testing is pointing to the head, not the block), so I can shove a new head on and fix it that way which should be quite cheap. I would do try it myself, but I've got a final year of uni taking all my time atm and once I finish work it's dark.

On the bright side, once this is gone, heeeeello E30 325! :)

FWIW - I did some digging and the ARC gearbox will work on an AFH, you just need to take the clutch and flywheel over so you've got the ARC/GTI clutch setup on the AFH engine. They also have slightly different sump mounting points for the 'box, but this isn't a big issue I'm told.

Hi man no worries, got most of my issues sorted. The help was very welcome, it gives a positive edge when everything goes mammaries skywards :) so thankyou! Hope things get back on track for you as soon as, but does it mean you are leaving us long suffering polo peeps? :( If so, it will be a loss to the forum, but i cant say i blame you for selling up, sounds like tasty replacement is on the cards 8) ! Anyhoo, best of luck with everything, take care dude.

Cheers! Glad most bits are fixed. :) Great little cars when they work, still the most fun car I've ever owned - more fun than the RX-8 I ran alongside it for a while!

So do I! With uni though the car wouldn't be getting much use anyway, so no genuine rush to fix it, I'm just getting impatient.

I will be leaving VAG indeed, will still kick around the forums though. I've just had enough of them breaking down all the time! My Fabia had loads of faults, constantly - piston rings, steering rack, bushes, snapped springs, gearbox, loads of electrical things. Golf - just crap in general and an unfixable electrical/ECU issue! The Polo I still love and this is the first time it's cost me money, but want to move on to something new, just bad timing with it breaking down now - after something more RWD and better for track use.

Glad to hear you will still come visit us! I wanted to keep my old car (mk3 fiesta 1.6s) and turn it into a screamer, would have required lottery funding mind!
Not sure if there was enough space inside the shell anyway, shall i go on and bore you with flights of fancy? hmmn! Well lets just say it was inspired over all by the 6r4 metro, and used ideas from the RS200 for drivetrain layout, to help weight distribution and chassis bracing. Oh yeah, and and a mid/rear mounted chevy V8 lump, insane perhaps, but one has to dream! Hope your ambitions bear fruit, im sure a cheeky post or link to show us how its going wont be too frowned upon. p.s. Sorry for gushing there!
