All the relays are located above the fuse box. I'll have to check the relay number tomorrow if you need to know it

Has your relay failed?

Thanks for your reply.
I've checked the screen element and its ok as is the fuse (47). I would now like to check the relay to ensure its contacts are ok and that the wiring to and from it are ok. There are 4 relays located under the facia to the right of the steering column. I've check them all (with the covers off) and can't see any of them move when I operate the screen switch. I can however hear a relay clicking when I operate the switch and it sounds as if its coming from this location. I now suspect the clicking noise may be coming from Onboard power supply control unit which I believe is mounted under these relays but it seems a daft place to put a relay carrying high current next to sensitive electronics, so hopping there are more relays hidden somewhere else.
By the way I have a 2002 mk 1V car.
Cheers

Rectangular or round headlights?

I think you actually have a 9n (or Mk6) polo. MKIV was vws designation, and nobody uses it as it makes no sense!

Ive moved this to the right section. You do in fact have a 9n or Mk6 by enthusiast terms

Someone in here should be able to answer where the relay is.

Hi Alex and thanks for your help. Well I've sorted it :D
The car has round headlights and belongs to a pal of mine who doesn't have a computer so I posted on his behalf.
He didn't seem to know which version car he has. It has round headlights and I gleaned from the Internet that its either a mk3f or a mk4, the version number apparently changed over in 2002 but not certain.
Anyway none of the 4 relays located behind the facia to the right of the steering wheel (on this car anyway) have anything to do with the heated rear screen. In fact the relay is housed in the Onboard power supply control unit. As it happens you could hear the relay operating next to the other 4 relays making you think it was one of them. The relay operation was in fact ok and the problem was a break in the wire from the relay to the screen heater which turned out to be an unplugged connector behind the carpet covering to the left hand side of the boot. Reconnected it and hey presto. Thank god for that cos it's too old to work outside these days.
Once again thanks for your input.
