Rattle/grinding after start on the GTi

The dear little GTi has developed another little problem. I start the car no problem and when she fires, I obviously bring the key back off the cranking position. Then about a second into running a horrid grinding/rattling noise comes from the engine bay for about 1 second. It is almost like the started motor is sticking on for a little to long.

After just replacing the clutch due to a cracked pressure plate last week the little car is starting to quite pee me off. Wondering if it could be a sticky solenoid on the starter or something. Just wondered if anyone had any similar symptoms and wondered if anyone knows if it could be anything else.

Thankyou all and hope you had a good christmas day,

Matt

Sounds like a sticky starter motor to me. Common in vw's mines been doing it two years now ;)

Yeah mine does it. Had it for over a year now. I try and flick the key for as short a time as possible however sometimes that causes it to not start at all, but the sound of the motor sticking is nasty. Have also developed another rattley noise a few seconds after start but I think that's an issue with the plugs as it was missing a while ago and I think it does it for a few seconds after start sometimes.

Does sound like the starter motor sticking. Either that or it's been mounted back on incorrectly.

Thanks for the replys guys. As I had the gear box out last week i am thinking something is not right. I think i shall whip the starter motor out tomorrow or later in the week and see if looking at it/cleaning it/lubing it will do anything. I shall report back with perhaps some findings.

Thanks again 8)

Use a good quality lubricant though be careful not to overload it or it'll transfer to the flywheel and clutch plates.
