No check engine light

Recently I have had a misfire which I have resolved by replacing the ignition leads, however I never had a warning light which i though I might of got. This got me thinking...

When you turn the key in the ignition you get the warning lights that come on and then go out, on the speedo side of the clocks I have the abs light and the epc, when I look at the correct angle I can see there is a logo for a check engine light which i have never seen since owning the car is this suppose to illuminate and then go out too?

Cheers

Depending on the age of your GTI, it may or may not show the check engine light on ignition

2000 models with an ARC engine generally did not, where as later 2001 models with an AVY block did.

Having three polo GTIs here, two of which are 2000 models and one a 2001, the only one it shows on is the 2001 on ignition :)
