Was it the actual handle that was freezing or the lock?

Sorry mate but you are creating the problem, warm water doesn't stay warm for ever, when it gets cold out there it freezes and causes the problem you're talking about....try de-icer.

I did not create the problem it was already there as why would i try and defrost it if it wasn't frozen? have tried de icer and that refreezes too the handle pulls and just stays out and lock is solid i don't like using too much de icer near the paintwork as it cannot be good for it, and jimbo yes mate it is the handle and the lock.
UPDATE- yesterday when not frozen up i pulled handle out held and sprayed in copious amounts of wd4o then same in lock and followed by 3 in 1 oil and handle has gone taut again and for the mo all seems well ! well it would wouldn't it as i have booked it in ?

thanx for takin the time to reply guys much appreciated.

I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM! It's so annoying because 80% of my daily commute is motorway for around 20 miles each way and having to hold the door closed is daunting, locking them doesn't do anything either

I've sprayed WD-40 in to drive out the moisture that could freeze but it didn't work, I was talking to someone on another forum about it and he mentioned VW Cylinder Lock Lubricant which stops it freezing, I've got it booked in to VW for next Saturday for a few little niggles and a Service so may tell them to add some of the lubricant whilst it's in. For now though I've mastered the best way of defrosting it, you need to pull the handle out, spray de-icer on it and push it in a little, then pull it out again and spray it again, it should be a little loose now and will go back into the body on it's own a little, pull it and spray de-icer and let go, do this three or four times and it will come free!

this is the only Polo I've had that has every done this, I don't want to but I'm losing hope with VW.

Hi Jimbo after a few days with the wd and 3 in 1 oil it seems to have done the trick but we are having cold but not minus temps so not 100%

Well it was minus 2 today and they didn't freeze *touches wood* but I haven't put anything on them yet, might try and pick up some of that 3-in-1 oil and put a few drops in tomorrow, thanks!

My car went in the other week and they have fitted some 'revised' door cables because they've had a lot of problems with freezing door handles on all models, it's on a request basis so if you're doors handles are freezing then I'd get your car in as soon as possible!
