9n heater temperature problem! Urgent!!

Hi guys,
I've heard this is a common problem..
The heater control temperature dial isn't working..
It either seems to be on cold or hot!?
Most of the time you can't even change the temp.. And at the moment it's just blowing cold!! Not good in this weather.
What is the problem? And what's needed to fix it?
I'm quite handy with fixing things etc so don't mind getting behind the glove box etc..
I've bought a new heater matrix thinking this was the problem.. And it's made no differents
Any help will be much appreciated!
