my 2003 polo 1.2 s is saying i have a mechanical fault with the nearside front wheel for the abs. im assuming this is to do witht he ring gear and the sensor is new and isnt pick up a signal

where abouts is the ring gear? is it apart of the wheel bearing? or on the driveshaft?

Part of the wheel bearing mate, I had one go and the sensor was fine. Replaced both front bearings as I'm a believer in replacing components like that in pairs (not always necessary I know) but yeah it solved the problem I had.
Do make sure the wiring is ok though as on a frinds old 9n the wire had split pretty close to the plug but couldnt be seen until the rubber was peeled back (ahem )
