Yours will be a 6n2 (Mark 4 facelift). The Mark 4 was referred to as 6n. The new model is 9n.

its all to do with whether ur in the uk or ur european
in the uk you have the mk4 mk5 and now mk 6
in europe the mk4 is known as 6n
the mk5 is known as 6n2 or in other words the faclifted mk4
and the 9n is the mk 6

It's the official designation of the vehicle (if you take it to a dealers for example).
Saying MK3 and MK4 etc is not correct (even though everyone does)...
I have been reliably informed that it goes something like this if you were to use MK's:
MK1
MK2
MK2 Facelift (MK3) (3F)
MK3 (MK4) - (6N)
MK3 Facelift (MK5) - (6N2)
MK4 (MK6) - (9N)
So.... The only way to make sure everyone knows what you're on about is to use the official VAG designation.
a 2001 Polo will be a 6N2 (or 6N2000 in some circles)

*deep frown* my Mk3 is a Mk3 and anyone who says otherwise is a doo-doo head.
=fiercely protecting distinction from all those scally mk2 drivers

=
For the older designations... i think it was like this...
"Mk1" (original derivation from Audi 50) -- "86"
"Mk2" (new body shapes and various other small changes) -- "86C"
"Mk3" (rounded-off, servo'd and injected mk2) -- "2F"
(2F? am i right on that?

)
then the later ones as already shown.

Mk1 / Audi A50:
Mk2:
Mk3 / Mk2F:
Mk4 / 6n:
Mk5 / 6n2:
Mk6 / 9n:
It does get a bit confusing.. I just call them mk[1-6], makes it easier..

Hmm, hang on then...
The MK3, is that not just a MK2 Facelift (ie MK2F - F for Facelift?)
Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Yep, technically Mk3 is actually Mk2 Facelift.. although it's a big enough facelift that most people just call it a Mk3. If you sent a Mk3 to a dealer to have something done to it though, they would put it down as 'Mk2F' which is technically the correct name for it.

OK, so back to my previous post then...
The latest Polos (9N) are actually MK4's!!
As the MK3's that we know and love are really MK2 Facelifts
The cars that we call MK4's (6N) are really MK3's
The cars that most call a MK5 is a MK3 Facelift (6N2)
and finally...
The "MK6" (9N) is really a MK4
Confused?

Yep, that's pretty much it

Although VW gave up on calling them 'Mk(x)' after the Mk2F, I guess just because they got confusing

So technically, the naming system is as follows:
Mk1 - Mk1
Mk2 - Mk2
Mk3 - Mk2F
Mk4 - 6n
Mk5 - 6n2
Mk6 - 9n
I was going to say it makes sense if you think about it, but it actually doesn't.. Oh well

Ah, but the first two were not actually mk1 and mk2 either, but 86 and 86C (C meaning... i dunno... remould?

) ?
yay for bafflement!

Aw hell, I didn't know about that.. and I can't think of anything relevant that translates into a german word beginning with a C, I don't have a clue what that's there for
