Front knocking noise

Hi all. New to Polo's but not VW so I have a couple of questions if you don't mind!
How can I tell iof i have a 6N2, is there a VIN list that will tell me? I am punting for the 6N2 on parts but it doesnt have the front spots which I thought the 'facelift' model had.
Now on to the main question. I have a knocking noise from the front when driving. I have changed the NS wheel bearing and CV joint so I only have a knocking noise in straight travel now, about 40mph sounds rotational and 'catching' from the OS. Anyone ever had anything similar and found it not to be the CV Joints (x2)/wheel bearing? Also on the OS i noticed that the side/side movement of the shaft was about 1/2" (in old money) and seems very loose in its movement, is this common for this model?
