How do you avoid stone chips?

Post by aaronon »

I rarely see anyone here talk about stone chips. Is there a special tips you guys have?

Any time I drive on a motorway or country road I end up getting a fresh one even though I waxed my car last week! It's so annoying :(:(

Is there a stone chip proof wax?

lol it's all down to the hardness of the paint, if your paint is soft which it will be given the heat we've had these few weeks then the paint will chip more easily. You can get ceramic paint sealants that are quite hard and have proved to be scratch resistant so could minimise the effects of chipping. CQuartz has been highly regarded on a variety of detailing sites. http://www.autogeek.net/cquartz-paint-sealant.html

As above, back off the car in front.

I've found the best way to avoid damage to my pride and joy is to leave it garaged at home and take the bus.

Thanks!

I was going to get it resprayed today but just thought that it'll happen again so might as well wait to some real damage before doing it.

Might colour magic it tomorrow. Then do a big thick coat of wax to keep the colour in! See if that works.

Have you considered some of those paint protection films? Might be worth a look...

I never tailgate though (I'm actually pretty slow like James May haha) I'm thinking these happened on delicious Irish country roads where tractors or Lorrys drives opposite you pretty close and as they pass they flick stones :( Thanks for the advance but ill try and be more aware of chips when driving :)
