1.2 2002 9n ignition barrel failure

Hi chaps,
after a bit of advice here as I'm jumping in the deep end with this as I have no previous experience with in-depth electronics or anything on any polo's.
Recently my car started flashing up the key in the car warning light on the dash which I believe is the key immobiliser/chip reader symbol, and normally represents either an ignition switch or barrel issue, or a weak battery.
Are there other tell tale signs of it having a weak battery? It used to sporadically appear, flashing whilst trying to start the engine. I thought originally it was something to do with the central immobiliser, but that is fine. I used to just wait 20 minutes or so and re-try and it used to work, so I shrugged the issue off as a character thing lol
Well... that was a mistake as I was recently stranded with my gf in the car on the way to devon and the thing would not start at all.
Called the rac out and he wiggled the ignition barrel and got the car started, but did not know exactly what the problem was - he said take it to a vw specialist, but I'm sure as hell not taking it to a VW dealership, and can get a friend to fix it if I can work out what the problem is and buy the needed part - i'm guessing it's either the ignition switch or the chip reading cylinder? Oddly enough the car seems to start once a day. Truly bizarre as the ignition barrel and key immobiliser is a passive system is it not? I.e. resets itself periodically?
Any advice or similar issues would be much appreciated, worried about the little vdub!
