Engine Knocking Noise

Does anyone have any ideas on the cause of a knocking/clanking noise coming from the engine area of a Polo Mk 4 (2002) 3 Door 1.2 Petrol on about 95k miles.
This noise only occurs at very low speed, so basically in first gear when just about to move up to second.
Once travelling at higher speed there is no problem.
Took the car to the garage today, by chance there was a small problem with the exhaust this was fixed and the garage and I thought the problem was solved.
But not the case, garage is going to look again on Friday but my gut feel is they don't know have much idea as to what is causing this?
