I thought l would post this as we tried both when buying our Polo.
Somebody asked this question in 2012 on here but received no replies.

For people buying their first Polo or first car, this is relevant, as most regular Polo's seem to be the 1.2 60hp. Is is worth looking for a 70hp?
I tried three 60hp and two 70hp versions ranging from 2005 to 2013. The 60hp is a two valve head and the 70 is a four valve.

The 70hp is faster as the revs climb past 4,000 but not much. The 60hp pulls better at low RPM in fact it will go right down to 1,000 and still accelerate.

My opinion after driving both versions?
If you want a basic Polo then the 60 hp is fine. The 70 is a bit faster but to notice you have to hammer it. The 60hp actually feels better in normal town driving, as it has more torque at low RPM.

Both engines will perform OK on the motorway. Sure, you will not be able to see off that 3-Series sat on your tail at 80mph but
both engines (60/70hp) will maintain outside lane speeds all day.

Is the 70hp also a 3 cylinder. My sons 1.2 2013 is a 60 hp three cylinder .

Yes it's the same engine, but the 70hp is a four valve head engine while the 60hp is two valve.

I tried both versions, and the 70hp is more lively at higher RPM, seemingly at the expense of less torque at lower RPM (than the 60hp)
The main reason l went for the 60hp is, my wife does not like revving up the engine in cars, so for her the 70hp would be worse.

This engine has now been replaced by a new version, from the VW Up. Both versions are now four valve heads, with (l assume) only software governing whether it is a 59 or 74hp.

For us, the 60hp is just fine. I'm surprised at how well it accelerates, and how it maintains motorway speeds with such a small power unit fitted.
