Posted this on another forum,but not had a response just yet.

Anyway it seems like i've fallen prey to the polo timing chain slip after a routine oil change.The car is a 2002 1.2 with only 53k on the clock.

Ive read on the 'interweb' that this is a common problem with them,I just can't believe a simple oil change has wrecked my engine!

A local garage has said it might just need a chain,,it may not of damaged the valves,,how likely is this???

Is the job to replace the chain difficult?? any special tools required etc..Im not a mechanic,,though 5 yrs ago the head gasket went on a cavalier I had,and I managed to do it via the haynes,put new valves in,new cambelt on etc.

Ive looked online for a how to but can't find anything.,,just really annoyed with vw over a simple oil change.

I'm guessing now, but, it seems that modern engines are designed for quick automatic assembly on an assembly line, this can mean that unless you have all the correct tools, some of these tasks can be a bit troublesome - in your position, I would cut my losses and either get a good VAG indie to do this work or a local VAG garage, They will use all the latest parts and should retro-fit any additional parts needed to make sure that this does not happen again. It is a complete disgrace that this sort of thing can happen with a modern engine - progress - not!
