Odeometer error

Hi,
2009 VW Polo 1.4 Match
I recently had a key cut and programmed by Keys R Us. As the guy plugged in his programmer and started to program the key I noticed that the odeometer showed 'error'
When I pointed it out to him he just shrugged his shoulder and said that I would have to go to the main dealer to get it sorted. Great! That just cost me £60.00.
I have been to the main dealer and they have told me I need a new instrument console at a cost of several hundreds of pounds (I'm awaiting the final bill)
Has anyone else ever heard of this problem after a new key been coded?
Also a word of warning, don't use Keys R Us
