Hi, i'm Adam from Hungary and just picked up my Polo.
Too bad in this country they only sell the 3door version with the pathetic 1.0 3cylinder engine.

Before engine remap, i would like to know what are the differences between the EA211 60HP and 75HP?
Engine codes are CHYA and CHYB.

I've heard the only difference between them is the engine software, can anyone confirm this?

Is it possible to load up the software of the 75hp version onto the weaker one?

So what i found out is this:
the two are the same mechanics wise, with the ECU being different.
However, the ECU remap is a bit too steep process for my taste, since it involves mechanical alterations as well, not only plugging in a cable and loading up a different ROM.
The BOSCH unit is pretty well protected from these ECU alterations, sadly.
You definitely don't wanna do that to a brand new car.

The two engine are roughly the same up to 5000rpm, thats where the 60hp unit starts to lose horsepower, while the 75hp version revs up to 6200 with increasing power.

By the way, as the engine wears in, it gets more powerful in my car..
Didn't expect this, but only 1200km in the speedo and it's already doing 150kph, with fuel consumption under 5 litres. (at 1000km's, it couldn't do 140!)
Thats pretty nice imho.
The factory value for Vmax is 161kmh, which i suspect it can do in the future.

As you've found out, there doesn't appear to be much difference between the engines mechanically, it's just mainly the map.

Shame about the ECU having to be opened to remap it, are there any 'tuning box' remaps available in Hungary?

I've searched the usual places here in the Uk and they don't seem to list anything for the 1.0TSI engine.

Oh there are many tuning box options to go with, but i'm not quite fond of the concept of those.

A remap is OK, since it alters all of the engine parameters, but a tuning box only plays with the air temperature sensor, as i know.
(it makes the engine think it's -50C outside, so the mixture is made rich)


I wonder if the complete ECU unit can be swapped maybe? Simply unplug the 60hp one and plug in the 75 version.
Not sure if this would work.

I know a technician here who does pretty good remaps, he did couple of my older cars. He could do this one as well, but
i think i'll chicken out now, it's still too fresh and the warranty is a good thing to have as well.
Maybe 2 years later i'll give it a go tho

Not all tuning boxes are the same.

There are some that just use a resistor on the air temp circuit to artificially raise fueling, but the better ones alter things like boost pressure, cam timing etc. They cost about the same as a remap though! In fact, I don't consider the cheaper boxes anything more than resistor mods...

Some of the piggy back ECU's coming out of the big tuning houses are very sophisticated and give some great results.

Those piggyback ECU's cost serious money. A couple of horsepower do not worth that, on this engine. Would be different story with a 140-180HP variant tho.

Sadly the resistor boxes are the mainstream ones around here, no better ones. None would buy them for a higher price, because everyone expects a miracle from a 50 euro box.
