Thinking of getting a GTI..

Hey all!

I'm new to this forum so be nice :) Just sold my Skoda Fabia VRS diesel and looking at two GTI's in particular. I've attached the links below and just wanted to know what you guys think? They look tidy and i've asked about previous service history and repairs etc but they're all very clear.

Really worried about gearboxes going bang as they're both high-ish miles. Anyhoo, just wanted to see what you guys thought :)

Should I steer clear of these cars because of the gearbox issues? I'm very tempted, just don't want to fork out the cash and end up with a huge bill a few weeks or months down the line. Is it worth getting something else more reliable?

The gearbox issue isn't major. The car is well worth having it fixed if it needed to be done at some point.

The 69000 mile one should keep going no problem as long as you look after it. I would recommend changing the gearbox oil straight away however.

I've had four 6n2s now and only one has had a gearbox problem. My current GTI has no issues whatsoever :)

Okey doke, appreciate the feedback :) I've pretty much been told by a whole load of people to steer clear or it'll go pop, but the lower mileage one looks in great condition and a pretty reasonable price!

Very rare to find one that hasn't been fiddled with.

Just to help the sell here... Some have their problems, little niggles that can be fixed and such but even with them you'll still want to drive it! Mine didn't have heating (no heating whatsoever) until last week... that didn't stop me from driving it and still loving it! I was freezing and felt like I could become an ice sculpture but that didn't fuss me because of what I was driving :D

They aren't as quick as others it its class and age such as the clio 172 but they are well equipped and also are quite rare! Plus no one really knows what it is unless they know about polo's or VW! Also If you're going to check them out test the A/C and heating and also check the windows and their switches. These seem like decent examples though so should be fine!

blimey-the mods are quick on here-not.nearly 24 hrs since i posted and it still isnt showing.
and all this 10 posts before you can be verified as genuine?
really?
no wonder there isnt much traffic on this site.
moderators- do you not think this puts people off? it has me,and i bought my car as a result of the build thread of said car on this site.
i replyed to a question about buying a gti despite the gearbox probs.this still isnt showing ...
what is the point of persevering here if you cant let people reply to genuine questions? (oh sorry forgot i need ten posts to be "active")-meanwhile the person that was worried about buying a gti and gearbox probs might well have sodded off and bought a clio 172 cup?
perhaps i should have done the same.at least it would be much quicker despite the build quality......

We do our best to approve the posts as quick as possible. Sometimes there may be a delay, but please bear with us. On a side note, that's Joe's old GTI isnt it? Lovely GTI - very well looked after 8)

I'd personally say too much money given the mileage. £2500 is top dollar for a car like that

hello alex-sorry for the rant
i understand the need for approving posts, and it must be a thankless task being a mod with people like me complaining.oops...
yes it is joes old gti, i love it- bought it in july, just a few issues to sort out(the audi s3 recaro's dont fit too well on drivers side(the little wheel in the runner has disintegrated, and the brakes leave a lot to be desired!!-they work, but are ok at best.my parents had a gti and it would nearly stand on its nose).something to do over christmas perhaps lol.
