NEW POLO GT OFFERS FRUGALITY WITH FUN

Volkswagen has launched a new, performance-orientated version of the Polo supermini. With leading edge Volkswagen TDI technology, the new Polo GT offers not only vigorous power, but also fuel economy of over 50 mpg – great news for hot hatch fans who are all too aware of rising fuel prices.

The new model uses the proven 1.9-litre TDI 130 PS engine, which features Volkswagen’s ‘Pumpe Düse’ (unit injector) technology for greater efficiency. With this advanced system, injection pressures are greater than those produced by common rail diesels, leading to superior power delivery and better thermal efficiency. In the Polo GT, this engine meets Euro 4 emissions standards, which means even greater tax savings for company car drivers.

The maximum torque of 229 lbs ft (310 Nm) peaks at a useful 1,900 rpm for highly tractable performance at low engine speeds. This is helped by a variable geometry turbocharger, which is designed to ‘smooth-out’ power delivery across the rev range. A six-speed gearbox, fitted as standard, allows relaxed motorway cruising.

Positioned at the top of the Polo range, the GT is equipped comprehensively. Highlights include Climatic semi-automatic climate control; ABS; four airbags; six-disc CD autochanger; leather-rimmed steering wheel, gear knob and gaiter; electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors; front fog lights; multi-function computer; remote central locking with alarm; front sports seats; and front electric windows. Outside, the GT is distinguished subtly by sporty 16" alloy wheels, lowered suspension and chrome ‘GT’ badges.

Available to order from this week, the Polo GT is offered in three- or five-door bodystyles. Prices start at £14,250 RRP on the road, with a £500 premium for the five-door model.

a fabia vrs matches the elise so the GT may just shade it but with an ecu remap it will show an elise a dusty pair of heels.

There's only one offical press image, which is this one:

Even though it's now been added to VW's "proper" Polo bit (not just the new developments), there's no new images there...

Are there any parts you're particulary interested in?

The one in the pics above is an "el cheapo" (can't be more specific - sorry) from the German market. AFAIK, not available here and probably not worth the hassle.

The Dune has an MP3 player in it. At least the one in my dealer's showroom does. Don't know if this is standard or an option, but it does *look* quite nice - a bit shiny though (if you say it irl, you;d see what I meant)! Anyway - here's an old thread on it:
