5 door 1.2 Mk4 down. Advice sought.

55 reg, 5 door 1.2, Mk4, 65K.
Not too sure exactly what is happened but the Polo is in the garage and things are not looking good.
I've been told that the engine is not able to be rebuilt, that there was a problem that should've been rectified with a engine recall by VW, which never happened - which I was unaware of when the vehicle was published a year ago - and I'm just seeking some more information so that I might be better armed when I go back to the local mechanics.
So, this is what I've been told.
Options 1: potentially have an engine rebuild which is actually not an option at all as I'm told it is not possible as no one can supply the parts.
(It's a balanced engine apparently and is replaceable but not rebuild able).
Option 2: putting in new engine in which is going be expensive. We're being quoted £2.5k.
Option 3: sell onwards and take a £2.5 hit. It cost £3.5k a year ago.
Any / all constructive comments would be welcomed.
Thanks
