a mk3 is the type of polo that ran between 1990-1994. Technically its the 2f (mk2 facelift) and in germany the 86c. The GT is a particular model in the mk3 range that featured a high compression engine, derestricted exhaust intake, sports cam and multipoint fuel injection. This was the mk3 flagship until 1991 when the G40 was introduced

I was happier with it as it was. Now it seems like us lower to bottom CL types are being ganged up on by these GT guys

GT stands for Grand Tourer. A car designed to carry 2 people at speed over great distances. The Golf changed all that by making a car that didnt technically fit the name. Vw did very well form the GTI badge and used this prestige on its top end models in the hope to sell as much as the golf. This was leter taken on by all the car manufacurers in one form or another RS XRi XSi GTi VTR. most were a deviation of Rallye Sport or Grand tourer or voiture tres rapide (translates to: very fast car) for the saxo.

GT wasnt just on the mk3, they did a mk2 GT in europe which was rebadged as "coupe s" for the coupe and "ranger" for the hatch for uk sales. mk3 saw them reinstate GT for both models but later discontinued the GT hatch in 1991/1992 due to poor sales against the GT coupe.

Mk3 is just the term we use over here to distinguish between the different groupings of models, makes things easier when discussing parts. so technically its put MK* then model number. Mk3 CL/GT/G40

Im not sure why its been changed as GT is covered in the name mk3. But so is G40 I suppose and that has its own section. It is stating the obvious a bit isnt it tho really?

:D I know what a GT is mate (i thought it was 2 OR 4, but whatever ;)), i was meaning in relation to the forum.

Dont worry, i've spotted the G40 section now, figured it out. The '40 gets it's own section (for charger, suspension, insurance and speeding fine specific troubles i 'spose), whilst all us poor C/CL/GT/special edition owners are lumped together here :D

Yeah doesnt exactly fall into the Grand Tourer category. The best long range polo is probably the 5-speed 1.3 CL (because of the gearbox) or obviosly a G40 but certainly not a GT

I dunno why you CL biiiatches think your car so low spec. Mine doesn't have a ciggy lighter, doesn't have a clock, doesn't have a centre console, does have a horid interior etc.

It's a GT because it's practical yet SPORRR-TAY :) and bodacious and rad and all those other young persons words. you know?

/marketing b@ll@cks hehehe...

(just exactly what does C and CL stand for anyway? I can understand the S in coupe S being sport, and the E in formule-E being for economy... CL?)

and i think my CL is just nice, or i did when i bought it anyway. it's not really missing much you could want on a city runaround, particularly given the date of manufacture.... was quite pleased by the level of spec i got for not much outlay. no revcounter or fuel light, 4-speed, only 2 brake lights (& one reverse/fog) and no sunroof or internally tweakable mirrors, but

*temp guage (been accustomed to that being distinctly extra in some other cheap cars.... one of which didn't have a FUEL gauge either, just a light)
*nice big clock :)
*plenty of cubby holes (door pockets, closing glovebox with cupholders and a lipped tray above it, two ashtrays, tape & ciggie box & "???" holders (three holes besides the ashtray on the centre console, on a CL - whats the third for?), wallet stow, change tray, etc...
*a "proper" horn :D in the middle of the wheel, not on a stupid stalk. and the hazard flashers on that smart looking little red button behind the wheel (now i realise, thats actually an ergonomic nightmare - with regular length arms, you just cant turn it on quickly no matter how hard you try - a dashmount one may be easier for kids to play with and look messy, but its better in an emergency)
*comfy, good looking seats with headrests and sporty-ish side supports (and the rear ones may not split, but they fold at least) and that oh-so-classy leatherette edging. you just dont get that on horrid old fiestas and their ilk!
*carpets that look like some design went into them
*always-cold face vents from the fan. quality.
*ciggie ligh... ahem... er... i mean... dash-mounted 12v power socket
*a radio of some description :D
*well positioned controls!
*3 speed fan
*support for front fogs. baby.

what i originally bemoaned, and still do a little - no mapholders on the back of the seats! it would take away from the already precious rear leg room, but would save a lot of clutter...
no adjustment possible to the steering wheel. at all. good job my legs arent even an inch longer! that or a seat height adjustment...
and rear windows that open would be, oh, just *mwah* fantastic! Need to study how the pop-out ones work on pandas etc (how do they seal?!) and consider a mod!

neither of the two above being available on any mk3 as far as i know :D

(ysee how its the little things that can have so much impact?)

One of those 3 holes was for the optional 5-cassette tape storage box. Classy! If I were you I would get an A4 Book style map of the uk cos then you can fit it in that cubby under the glovebox. Those rear mapholder things on the seats would be very useful tho.

Don't know why GT's have been made special in this forum as at the end of the day it is still a mk3. Same with G40's.. I've suggested before that the mk3 and G40 forums merge, but it just ain't gonna happen.

I would have bought it if it was a CD holder. Tapes are dead now, plus my CD player does not have te facility to play tapes.

Out of interest, which hole does the tape player go in? The bottom or the top one?
