Hi,
My gti's oil sump is leaking, is there a specific gasket in between, or is it a liquid gasket?
Grts,
Han

Its a liquid gasket - Replace with something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LOCTITE-5980- ... 4ae02ef8b7

I don't like silicone based gasket stuff. In my experience it always starts leaking again over time. How about Loctite 574?

574 is too rigid for that unfortunately

Had the same problem. Bought the original VW D176404A2. Never had a leak ever since

......and don't be tempted to put too much on. Excess material can cause serious problems.

When I was on my way to the garage, I stranded about 3 miles before reaching it. My generator died.

On the highway my battery light turned on, so I took some measures to save juice, but then more warning lights turned on and the engine started to jerk. Managed to reach a bus stop. The garage guys were there shortly thereafter to tow me. Oh well, had to happen sometime; it was still the original.

Removing the oilpan is pretty problematic. Not only a drive shaft is in the way, but also the catalytic converter, and lastly... the gearbox has to be removed! There are 1 or 2 screws inside the flywheel housing.

So, clutch will be replaced also...
Start with a leakage, end up with new generator and clutch.

Oh dear!

The ones inside the bell housing can be removed without removing the gearbox, but it is very difficult and you need some rather obscure extensions to do it

It can be done with the right tools without removing anything else

If I replace the clutch, should I replace the clutch cable as well?

Only if it needs doing

You should most definitely replace the release bearing sleeve as this always wears down and people forget to replace it

I don't know what that is. I know about a release bearing, but that is included in the clutch set. Do you have a part nr?
