Problem with electric window

Hi All

I have a 2008 polo 1.2 12V

Recently my driver side window had been intermittent in the sense that you hold the button up but it goes up, stops, up stops etc. Sometimes it doesn't even work unless you turn the engine off and on again.

Yesterday I took off the door panel and greased the rails just in case there was too much friction causing it to stick. However after putting it back together when operating the switch there is a clicking but the windows now do not operate at all!

I have done the trick where you put the key in the lock and hold it open. Doing this opens and closes both front windows and so I assume the motors etc are fine. The passenger side switch also operates as normal.

Does this imply that the drivers side switch need replacing or is there something else which im missing? (i have read that there could be exposed wires in the door connector but not checked this yet).

Any suggestions would be great :)

Could be broken wires, or it could be a faulty switch

do you know of any other 'usual' areas where the wires could be damaged?

seems like the switch is trying to do something due to the 'clicking' noise when pressing it :S

Its normally where the wires pass between the door and the car itself

Normally that issue is caused from a bad ground (the brown wire in the loom)

Thanks for this

Is there a specific ground point that I should look at?

Taken door card off again and rubber gromit in between door and consol.

Checked wires and I can't see any obvious splits or exposed wires. Also took apart the switch and agin nothing obvious, circuit board etc looks fine.

Put everything back together and the switch now closes the driver and passenger window when pushing AND pulling the switch but it doesn't open it at all.

Will try a new switch to see if that works. Will post up what happens but any other suggestion would be welcomed :)

UPDATE

Bought new drivers side window switch, fitted and ..... Still doesn't work :(

Same problem, window goes up and down when using the key in the lock (twist and hold and windows open) but when using the drivers side switch the window goes up even when pressing down!

Is this a sign of a bad earth ? If so, where are the earth points?

UPDATE - PROBLEM RESOLVED :D

Took door card apart and unplugged all connections to check everything was ok and more sure there was no corrosion which there wasnt.

I then held the window switch down whilst my brother wiggled all the connection points. When wiggling the point where the wires connect to the window motor the window started to go down! After wiggling each individual wire we traced it to one particular black wire which was slightly longer than the others and kinked. We bunched the wires together and cable tied them so that they were all straight. This has resolved the problem and the window now works fine :).

Its possible that the black wire may be frayed internally and so if it stops working again I will replace it but everything is fine so far.
