Stage 1 polo gti 6r

Hi all, forever reading through threads on the forum but never got involved. So thought it was about time.

I have a 2014 polo gti 6r, cars on 13k now and had 1 service, not had any oil consumption issues at all. Coil pack went at about 4k but nothing since then.

Thinking to go revo stage 1 and a VWR intake, what are people's thoughts on modding these engines? Surely if I haven't suffered any issues then I got one of the last and hopefully the stronger engines?

I think that if you've got a good one, then the engines are quite strong, remapped and with more frequent oil changes they should be fine.

The weak point from a tuning point of view is the auto box.

Mine was running a tuning box since 35000 miles, the TMC one, which was a great bit of kit and I never had an issue with it. I estimate it was running 200bhp+, and obviously more torque, and it's the latter that is the problem.

At about 56000 miles, I started noticing juddering as the box slipped into second gear, and at times it was quite violent. It didn't do it all the time, mainly when the car was hot and I was in traffic or around town.

I have heard that some new and totally standard GTIs do this though, so maybe the tuning made it worse.

I took the box off and the problem mostly went away, but I guess by then the damage was done as it still occasionally slipped/juddered in second gear.

I managed to recreate the fault whilst at a VW dealer, and they also unearthed a fault code around 'gearbox torque limit exceeded'. They diagnosed worn clutch packs, and proceeded to replace them over the next 10 days. It was the first one they'd done, so they took their time! The packs were nearly £600, and then there is the labour of course.

Since returning, the car drives fantastically, the box is smoother and there is more urge at the top end which suggests the clutch packs were slipping unnoticed in other gears and higher rev points.

So, I would say if you're prepared to replace your clutch packs at more frequent intervals, change the engine oil more frequently etc, then you're good to go.

I know from reading tuning threads on here, some folks were getting big power with no issues from the polo in the early days. The problem is that most of those guys seem to have moved on to other vehicles, and we have very little long term feedback. Tuning does wear things out more quickly, of course, but I don't fancy replacing clutch packs every 25k, although I accept my issue might have been there already when I got the car at 30k. The previous owner could have had a tuning box on it before I got it of course!

Fingers crossed the engine is strong, revo have flashed the ecu and reads no faults and are happy to stage 1.

I will be having a full oil change at the time which is way before the 18000 that is on my VW service plan as I'm on 13000 now. I'm hoping that like you say, with oil changes more frequent. Warming and cooling down of the car, and the fact that I don't use it as a daily car in the first place.

Car should be getting booked in for this week so I will let you know!
