Navigation on SD card

I recently got my VW Polo and the dealer said that I could download the navigation system from the internet, upload it onto an SD card and use it in my car. I eventually managed to find it, download it and upload it onto the SD but now when I put it into the slot it says 'Error: SD Card'. In order to upload the data onto the card in the first place I had to change the card's format as I have a macbook so I wonder if it's that but I can't change it back without deleting all the data. Also I have no idea how to find out what type of media system I have, sorry. Any help is very much apprechiated.
