Hi everybody,

Due to all sorts of weird and wonderful problems (intermittent blank display, spurious flashing fault lights )
I have just replaced the instrument cluster on the daughter's car with a used one that is the exact same part no ( 6N0920904D )
from a well known auction site and now have a steady ABS light and a flashing handbrake light .
Everything else seems to be working normally and the seller has assured me that the part is good.

There is no ABS system fitted to her car so I guess the dash is from a car that previously had ABS fitted and the dash control unit is correctly
saying that it is now "missing".

I have tried to reset the ABS DTC using Vagcom and clear the 2 lights but no joy.

Does the cluster need to be reprogrammed / software loaded or is there something else I can do ?

I have been in touch with VW and they are looking for £294-61+ VAT (part ex) !!!
and that is just for the cluster which is way out of her budget.

(Her car is a 2000 1.0 6N2 engine code AUC Chassis no WVWZZZ6NZ1Y075034)

All 6N2 polos have ABS - so unless its been removed (which i strongly doubt) it has ABS fitted

Does VCDS show any faults on the cluster? If so, what are the specific codes.

The DTC IS 01316.

You may actually have an issue with the ABS module

Check the fuses on top of the battery

Failing that you may have the issue with the PCB - a fix for this is in a guide in the DIY section. It affects most 6N2s around this age

Well, not all 6n2's had ABS. Mine didn't and when i fitted the GTI cluster with the chrome rings and clock in the middle i had the same issue with the ABS light and flashing handbrake.
It needs to be re-coded. You need access to vcds and then it is just a matter of changing the last digit from 4 to 0 or vice versa (i don't remember right now), of the cluster coding sequence. I'll search my notes and let you know if i find it.

I have just got out from underneath the car and I can confirm that there is no ABS system fitted on it and this agrees
with the vehicle data codes sticker inside the service schedule booklet.

If anybody can tell me how and which codes need to be changed using vagcom or any other way of getting rid of the fault and lights,
my daughter and I would greatly appreciate it.

I stand corrected then - My apologies. My 6N2 sales brochure lists ABS as standard equipment on all 6N2 variants. Bizarre they didnt fit it to all models given it was standard spec.

As Tribal says, its a recode of the instrument cluster. Very simple - takes two minutes.

so what do I need to do ?

I remember that this helped me fix this. Pay attention to the last paragraph. It all has to do with the last digit of the coding sequence. Write it down before doing any changes in case something goes wrong. I'm sure you'll find it. Good luck!

Look at the first two digits in the coding. Add the values for the options together to get the correct coding.

00 - No available equipment
+01 - Brakepad wear sensor warning active
+02 - Seatbelt warning active
+04 - Washer fluid level warning active
+08 = Seatbelt Warning active (NAR only)
+10 = Seatbelt Warning Driver & Passenger active (NAR only)
+16 = Secondary Display (Radio/Navigation) active

Look at the third digit in the coding (Market version):

1 - "EU" 24 hour clock (may result in odometer in km in 2002+ clusters)
2 - "USA" 12 hour clock
3 - "Canada" 12 hour clock (may result in odometer in km in 2002+ clusters)

4 - "UK" 24 hour clock (should result in odometer in miles)
5 - Japan
6 - Saudi Arabia
7 - Australia

Look at the fourth digit in the coding (Cylinders):

3 - No Service Interval (2002+ models)
4 - 4-cylinder (1999-2001 models)
6 - 6-cylinder (1999-2001 models)

Look at the fifth digit in the coding (Distance impulse multiplier):

2 - 3538
4 - 3648 (some 2002+ models)

So, if you want to have Seatbelt warning and washer fluid warning only in a 2001 Canadian 6-cylinder vehicle, (add 00+02+04 = 06),3,6,2 = 06362.

19 - CAN Gateway: -- KWP-1281
VCDS Works fine. This is physically located in the Instrument Cluster, but functionally it controls communications on the CAN-BUS.

Look at the last digit in the coding. Add the values for the options together to get the correct coding.

0 - No available equipment
+1 - Automatic Transmission
+2 - ABS Brakes
+4 - Airbags

So, if you want to support Automatic Transmission, ABS Brakes, and Airbags, (add 1+2+4 = 7) = 00007. Note: 2002+ models do not need to be coded separately for automatic transmission, so a 2002 with Automatic Transmission, ABS Brakes, and Airbags, (add 2+4 = 6) = 00006."
