Non Starter and P1517 code

Hi Guy's,

I'm new on the forum and my main car is a Seat Altea which I'm really happy with. My partners car is the vw polo 2003 1.2 petrol and it has developed a non starting fault. We are hoping to get rid and sell it on but need to get it going and started first. I am fairly useful at fixing cars but haven't been able to find the corresponding parts to fiddle with for the P1517 fault code.

Some background on the car we've had it for 8 years and it has been a great work horse for most of this time rarely failing and hasn't cost us much bar the suspension. In the last 6 months it intermittently wouldn't start first time maybe 1 in 20 starts but always on the second or third key turn. Now it just won't start at all. It turns over and fuel is going to the engine but it never quite gets going. We've changed sparks, coils and have a new battery in there now but still no joy.

The fault code points to the ECU Relay J271 but I can't locate it to change it? If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate the help.

Welcome

This thread might help

its not unusual for the timing chain to have issues on these engines

Thanks for the links, seems a bit drastic, is there any way to check the condition of the timing chain before taking the plunge?

That sounds quite extreme for what is described as a relay fault? Any idea where that relay is located so I can try that first?

It sounds drastic but it's incredibly common - it's more checking that the crankshaft and camshaft are in alignment than checking it's overall condition. It's especially common on the early models like yours.

That relay is built into the ECU and is teamed with an additional relay on the relay board

Get the timing checked before you spend any more money

I had the timing go on my old Ibiza same engine, engine was fine, threw a new chain and tensioner on and away she went! It was a costly venture due to labour but parts can be fairly cheap...
