Windscreen replacement

Put this on the 6N2 bit but know people like me only use the GTI threads........ 
Has anyone had any success with replacing a windscreen? I have a crack in mine so I can kick that out easily enough but I want to know how easy it is to remove one without breaking it?
Also how easy is it to fit one and how much have people paid for one off a scrap yard?
In short, (to keep the GTI off the road) I've got 2 months mot on a 1.4 I won on eBay to replace my UP which was on a PCP deal. Will it fail a mot for a cracked screen??
