What are you allowed to service yourself?

As a fair few of us appear to have our cars on lease I'm wondering what those of us without VCDS (yet) can "get away" with servicing to ensure our cars remain warrantied before VW and the lease companies get upset. I.e with VCDS I guess we could do the oil change and turn off the reminder but my basic assumption is that it has to be recorded in the VW service book which would also include:

- Mileage based service
- oil & filter change
- air conditioning filters

However for brake discs and pads I cannot see that I need to use a VW dealer for these so long as they are OEM parts?

Is there anything else I'm missing?

It really depends upon the terms of your lease agreement. Some are very strict others less so, hope yours is the latter type.

I'd say you would need to take it back to the dealer where you purchased the car for all services etc.
The whole point of the lease is so that the company has a good solid car to re-sale once you have finished your lease.
Of course if you damaged anything, you would go else where so you weren't hit with the huge bill from the lease company

In my honest opinion, i really wouldn't get a lease car. Too many people i know have had one and when handing it back at the end of the lease, they were hit with fines for mileage, tyre wear, paint marks etc. etc.

If you do any servicing yourself VW has the right to decline any warranty issue that could be even remotely linked to the part you yourself have serviced.

When picking up the misses BlueGT in November they asked if we would like a service plan. I informed the salesmen I was a mechanic and asked what would be required to maintain the warranty.

According to the salesperson so long as it's done by a VAT registered garage and is stamped on service, it doesn't matter. Doesn't even need genuine parts. Apparently.

That's legal here in Denmark too... BUT if the engine brakes down beyond repair VW have the right to denie you a new engine if they haven't done the servicing them self.
And I perfictly understand them. They can't be asked to put their head on the block and assure that another garage has done a proper job.
For all they know the unauthorised garage could be cutting corners to make a little more money.

Yes I know that's a paranoid way of thinking... But that's how VW looks at it.

I'd think that that is fair enough, when you buy a product that comes with a warranty, you enter into a legal agreement with them, it is just the EU officionados that are pretending that you are free to do as you please - I would stick with VW dealer to make life simple.

Thanks for the input guys. I had a chat with the VW garage and basically bulbs, brake discs, brake callipers and pads are fine as they don't need a VW stamp but must VW approved parts, as they're not something that is recorded in the service book it's not a must BUT as has been said here, if I then had a problem with any of those components then VW wouldn't touch it. I'm competent enough to deal with those parts so I'll decide on that if I wear anything out. Otherwise everything else and it goes off to the garage.
