Age old question!

I know this topic comes up regularly (although I have run a search and can't find it on the forum) but what is the recommended fuel rating on the new Polo GTI? And what are you guys running them on/do you notice a difference?

I would assume the need to be on 98 Ron or above but as I haven't taken delivery of mine yet I don't know.

Many thanks in advance.

It says Super on the fuel flap with a minimum of 95. From day 1 I've only used VPower so can't do any comparisons on any other fuels, averaging 36mpg on my drive to work and back which is 13 miles each way - usually includes a good blast when I've got stuck behind someone doing 40 in a 60 lol

I've got a mkiv Golf Anniversary too and will only run that on VPower now cos it really doesn't like Tesco Momentum so I won't try anything else in the Polo.

I switch between Momentum and V Power on mine, don't notice any difference between the two.

95 is fine for normal everyday driving. You won't get any advantage what so ever out of Vpower just following traffic around town.

Obviously I can't say on the Polo but in my Golf I definitely get better mpg from Vpower. There's also the added bonus of the cleaning capabilities.
At the end of the day it probably costs an extra £2-3 per fill up, not a huge difference in the grand scheme of things.

It's all personal preference at the end of the day :) I don't smoke and rarely drink so I may as well treat my cars lol

I've run my last 3 cars on nothing but 99. Definitely see marginal economy improvement as well as it being needed to run my APR map now as I went for the 98 map instead of 95.

i use vpower in my gti as that's what i used previously but the cleaning properties are more important in the new gti as it is a direct injected engine

this means that the cleaning properties are maybe a little more important. vw have changed the injector setup to help the engine but a little extra help won't harm it.

if i was mainly using normal unleaded i'd probably stick a tank of super in every 10 normal tanks

Which all VW engine's have been for the last 20 years. ;)

no that haven't they have been injected but via the inlet manifold

the tsi in the polo gti is injected straight into the cylinder which means there is a possibility of the inlet valves getting clogged up with crud

Well maybe or maybe not, what can be a disaster a few years down the line is where it is only direct injection, as you said into the cylinder head, all TSI/TFSI were built that way, but maybe this 1.8 engine has been revised to include supplementary inlet injection, said to aid emissions and economy - though the truth will be "to allow slight washing/cleaning of the inlet valve area" - as this has become a big issue with all direct injection petrol engines, I seem to remember only Toyota got wise to this and added some inlet tract fuel injection to stop that happening.

I sort of hoped/guessed that VAG would have added that to when they revised the 1.2TSI as well, I think that I was wrong to make that assumption!

the 1.8 tsi in the polo does infact have the extra injectors in the inlet manifold to clean the valves but i imagine they are used very little of the time.

the state of some inlet valves you see off some direct injected vw engines

i just think extra bit of cleaning that some of the additives gives you from some super unleaded petrols can't be bad

Well it will be the fuel from these extra injectors that will be doing the inlet tract critical cleaning, so yes, fuel with extra cleaning package will help, as will the fuel entering through the direct injection system clean the internal head area.

The main thing maybe to remember here is, there will be a European directive to demand that what we call 95 RON fuels in UK can be used with any normal engined cars supplied as new models after a certain date. Using higher rated fuels might in some cases be needed to achieve rated output power, though I'd expect that too will be included in the directive, none of this stops us using higher/better fuels as in the case of Nitro etc, the additive packages are also improved and maybe miles/pound are improved, which must be good for the planet!

I can't see what the future trends will be as compression ratio and higher octane go hand in hand along with charging/turboing, detuning engines to run well on 87 and 89 RON surely must lead to waste unless engines end up being designed to run well on these fuels.

Might be similar in a BGT to a GTI, but Esso supreme unleaded over VPower is better for mileage, and most of time responsiveness too :)

That is what I thought too, but, I think that I read last night, maybe on the SEAT forum, while they were describing all the virtues of the new Leon Cupra 290, that these extra injectors are used always during warm up phase and when "power" demands were made, so my interpretation was that during light cruising it would be just direct injection.

So, boot it a lot and use "proper" fuel and you get clean(er) inlet tracts!

Edit:- I don't know how they intend to resolve this issue with supercharged petrol engines as at least on my S4's engine, the supercharger is in the Vee ie at the inlet side of the banks!
