High pitched noise PLEASE HELP

Hi,

In November 2015 I bought a brand new polo 1.2 TSI SE. Since buying it I have noticed two problems:

1) when the engine is on there is a constant high pitched whistling noise. When I stop at traffic lights at use the stop/start technology the noise stops, and as such as I press down on the clutch and the engine re-engages the noise starts again. It is absolutely driving me up the wall and I have mentioned it to the dealership I got the car from and they say it is all "normal" (it definitely isn't. and if it was I wouldn't have bought the car)

2) I have noticed that when I brake there is sometimes a screeching noise coming from the brakes. This happens mostly when turning and braking e.g. pulling into my driveway or bay parking, but can also happen just pulling up to a red traffic light. I have been out with an engineer from the dealership but the noise did not happen (typical). They then took the car in for a day and drove it a fair bit, as well as taking off the wheels and looking to see if anything was up with the brakes. Again, everything is "normal".

I'm really unhappy that I've paid so much for the car and there are two things that are grating on me that apparently either don't happen for anyone else or are "normal things". The engine noise in particular is really irritating me, I have to drown it out with music whenever I'm in the car otherwise I get annoyed.
Does anyone have any advice at all? Or has anyone experienced these problems? Can I take it to a different dealership and get them to check it over, or does it have to be the dealership I bought the car from?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Might help with a video if possible for the noise? Does it change pitch as the revs increase? Has it always happened or only just started happening? Vibrations in the engine bay can cause strange noises, I know the fuel lines in earlier models needed extra support to stop vibration/noise.

My new Polo GTI had noisey brakes in the first 400 miles, they've calmed down now and don't squeal. I bedded them in gently and have yet to use them hard. I washed the wheels twice with Auto glym custom wheel cleaner which also helped. If the noise had not gone by around 500 miles I was going to use the brakes on a quiet stretch of road heavily and do an emergency stop but I haven't needed to do that. Make sure if you try this no one is behind you and that all items in the car are secure including yourself and make sure everything is up to temperature nicely.

I'd left posting to this thread until lots of others with this problem chimed in, so they didn't!

As above, you really need to post a video so that others can maybe strengthen your case if your dealer is being dismissive.

One possible source seems to be the Sandon air conditioning compressor - this has been commented on elsewhere in other VAG marque forums for the latest Fabia/Polo/Ibiza.

Brakes, my wife bought a Polo 1.2TSI 110PS SEL 5 door brand new in mid August last year, it has the bigger ATE callipers with 288mm front discs and rear discs, and we do not have any issues with noises - other than the EVAP piping that seems to be tuned and causes noises, I hope to get VW to man up on that issue, or I will buy the newer version of the pipe that Skoda fit when customers complain!

Edit:- by the way, as all your running so far has been in winter, it is possible that the friction surfaces have been glazed with road salt, if so the advice above should get rid of that, if not you will need to clean the discs and pads with emery cloth etc - though this should not be happening on a modern car!

Right, by now my wife's August 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI 110PS SEL, has been in for it first service and I reported the "Peeeeeeping" noises which sound like they are coming from the EVAP hard ribbed pipe that is connected to the EVAP valve(solenoid), this resulted in denial of ever hearing about this issue with these cars getting reported by owners, well here is your first one! Pipe was ordered up last Monday afternoon, it arrived by Thursday and they accepted a workshop booking for today Monday. Car has now been back in and the pipe has been replaced, new pipe is P/N 04E 133 518 G and is a preformed smooth walled "rubber" pipe. Now "Peeeeeeeeping" has gone, so easy when you know how, thanks to a "foreign" ie not UK based member on the Briskoda site!

Now form a queue and get them replaced, or save time and buy one and fit yourself.

If you get chance can you please post a pic of the pipe in situ? Mine isn't annoying me enough yet but when it does, I'd rather not have to cross the threshold of the appalling Inchcape of Colchester...

Sorry but I have not got an account to post picture to/from and we can't post pictures directly onto this forum - makes sense as it wastes storage space.

Right, so looking under the bonnet, just behind the engine coolant header tank, there is a space/partition etc where there are two small pipes coming up out of, they are connected to hard plastic connectors, one is a smooth walled rubber pipe and the other, from factory, is a hard ribbed plastic pipe. If you follow this hard ribbed plastic pipe, you will see that it ends up getting connected to a "blob" that is clipped into the driver's side of the engine area. That pipe is only 9 inches > 12 inches long, it is that second pipe that gets replaced with a smooth wall rubber pipe with the quoted part number printed on to it.

So, what you need to tell VW dealer is, "car is making Peeeeeep Peep peeeeep" noises when running on light load and warmed up, if you press the throttle it should stop, if you back off the throttle it will stop. Eventually all MY 2016>2017> should be getting fitted with either that interim pipe or a quick update of that part of the installation to stop that happening. There is a known fix for this but it will only be carried out if you complain about it - don't be put off by "we have never heard of anyone complaining about that before" - that seems to be one of the standard phrases the service receptionists/semi-tech monkeys are trained to say. Push the point and if necessary quote the replacement pipe part number, make them do their job, once they have bothered to check up "what is what" - as the service manager and workshop supervisor will know about this if they have bothered to keep up to date with VW supplied webinor(sp) - ie online regular information sessions. As I said, a 5 minute job if you are okay with removing pipes and fitting new ones, original pipes are retained using "press to release" clips, new pipe has or needs 2-off sprung pipe clips that you can hold open with suitable pliers/small pipe grips.

Edit:- if you PM me an email address I can send a picture!

Am I the only one that read the 'please help' in a high pitched voice?

Anyway, I would go back to the dealer where you bought it and show them. Let them solve it.

Very difficult for them to deal with as they are only VW main dealers!
Anyway, due to a complete disconnection in the flow of information from me reporting this > service department authorising the ordering of the newer version of pipe > contacting me to book a time slot to fit new pipe > then something went wrong! I turned up at main dealer at correct day and time (remember a hour workshop time slot) > as I handed the car in they confirmed the car reg number then went to walk away - " it will take a few hours to fit and we have people waiting for work to be done already, so come back in maybe 4 hours" - I reminded them that they seem to be operating "timed slots" for work to get done, this is highlighted on huge boards in the service reception area, they folded a bit but still said it was still a couple of hours job - I pointed out that it was one short hose to be taken off, nothing else needed removing to give them access, then one new short hose fitting - being generous, a 15 minute task! What is wrong with these people, originally the workshop supervisor/foreman confirmed to the person that phoned me to arrange for fitting this that it would be an all day job as it was a complete replacement fuel line! Anyway, worse to come, as I wandering aimlessly round the retail park beside that main dealer, I get a phone call from their service department, "can you confirm to us why your car has been booked in today?" - "luckily" at least I managed to remember that it was to fill the new EVAP hose pipe that they had ordered in at my last visit a week before, then "can you hear this noise under the bonnet?" I answered that I could not be two places at the same time, so what I was reporting was noises, seemingly coming into the cabin area from under the bonnet - not good enough! Now they have sent out a "tell us how we performed" survey.

Thanks for the description, I'll take a look later.

Seems like it's not just Inchcape but a generic VW thing. You would have thought that after the emissions nonsense that VW would be briefing their dealers to go the extra mile. Instead it seems like the same old story of customers being a mere inconvenience once the keys have been handed over. Inchcape have repeatedly demonstrated such a persistent couldn't care less attitude across multiple "managers" that I will simply move the vehicle on at the next opportunity. VW's apparent inability to call the dealer to task means I also won't be considering any of the VAG brands in future.

I have just completed a "how did we do" survey and stuffed my comments above in the first text area, and allowed them to let dealership see who made these comments. Only thing is that it is in my wife's name so I hope she remembered what I said to her about that visit. One naughty answer maybe, remember it is meant to be from my wife - "what single thing made you buy a VW?" - answer was "my husband owns a VAG specific scan tool" - that was an honest answer by the way!

Edit:- the trouble with any of these surveys are they are designed to extract the best and suppress the worst areas of interest - same old same old, and someone makes more money from the idiots using the results of these surveys!

I am pleased in one way to have found this post. I too have had this problem on my March 2015 Polo 1.2 TSI SE DSG and was fobbed off each time I went to the dealer about it - haven't had that one before - was the response. My wife and I were so fed up with this supposedly "unfixable" problem, it became an ordeal to go out in the car, that we changed cars in Sept 2016, another Polo which I insisted on driving before accepting, plus more deposit, higher payments, etc. Only found this post about a week after changing, the word livid comes to mind, so I am in consultation with VW (Macclesfield|) about why my car was not fixed. I won't be using that VW dealer again, and most probably won't buy another VW after this experience. A shame really as I have had VW cars for 20 years.
