Protected no claims - worth it or not?

OK, just having a bit of a think about insurance - cos I want to

.
Is it worth getting protected no claims? I mean - overall the insurance companies MUST make money from it, so if you average things out then it's not worth it. If you crash then your premium still rockets because your risk increases even though it's protected.
But - it's a risk not taking it.
Who here has had protected no claims and then had an accident? What did it do to the premium?
I've heard mixed reports.....

depends - how much is NCB worth as a discount on your premium anyhow?

Rough guide:
1 year = 30%
2 years = 40%
3 years = 50%
4 years = 60%
5+ years = 70%
Some companies will give 65% for 4 yrs NCB (eg. More Than), some give 75% for 5+ yrs. And of course some only insure drivers with 4 or more yrs NCB... but they don't seem to like GTis for some reason...
On the subject of protected NCBs, I was told it should cost roughly 5-8% of the original premium quote. I've got protected NCB - after driving a 998cc Mini for 4½ yrs and then ditching it for a shiny Polo GTi I thought it might be wise

and it adds a little more peace of mind that if I did have an accident (hope not!) then my premium won't be soaring to £2000+ or some equally mad level!

40% for 2 years?
i shudder to think what my premium might be this year if i didnt have that then... suddenly the protection charge doesnt seem that bad.
(ah, more than, i knew there was one last place i had to hit up for a quote)

hmmm
still don't know if it's worth it until we get someone who can tell us how much the premium goes up if you crash - then you could work out if it's worth keeping the no claims or not - compared to the cost of keeping it!
OK, I guess it's like this:
premium at 0%
no crash: 2000
crash: 3000 1st year, 2600 2nd year, 2200 3rd year
--------------------------------
so if we take 5 years, year 1 we have 60%, year 2 CRASH, year 3 and year 4 and year 5 depend on which approach we take
protection
800 + 1200 + 1040 + 880 + 800
no protection
800 + 1800 + 1300 + 880 + 800
so no protection costs us 860 more - 9 years worth? but this is only a guess when a crash puts your premium up 50%.

on that subj, has car insurance as a whole gone up by like £50 or more this year? using the exact same details as last year except now
1. i'm in a proper job rather than being a scumbag "recent graduate" skiving on the dole
2. i'm a year older (and so is the car)
3. i've also got an extra years no-claims
4. mileage dropped from 8 to 6 kays a year (new job = train commutage)
the best that endsleigh could do me is twenty quid
more than last year

and it
still looks like that might be very nearly the best quote i'll get.. someone (direct line?) did me a tenner less than last year, but there's probably fine print
