An insane amount of faulty turbos have been fitted and blown.

Where is the code on the turbocharger that shows if it's a 701T or a 713J? I have had a look around with my head under the bonnet but I cant seem to find that code on my turbo.

Loads of the Golf GTIs had the same problem, also its not helped if people don't let the engine cool down a little after a hard drive, or let the engine idle for a minute before turning it off after a hard drive.

i think it's made by IHI and it is a IS12 from what i have read.

i wouldn't worry about them blowing up as you can kick up enough of a fuss to get it sorted for very little

Says it right at the top just next to where it meets downpipe. It'll have IHI then the number.

Edit. I checked again and it doesn't. Can't see it from the top.

What's the easiest way to tell if it's gone? My partners turbo went on her 6c gti and my car doesn't feel 100% vw said when I had it serviced the turbo looked fine. But that could be a way of them trying to get out replacing it. Just want to know my car is running correctly. I may try and locate the turbo part number tonight. Surprised they haven't recalled effected cars seen as though there has been a few cases

VW, or any car company will not recall cars just for a faulty part - unless it is safety related.

VW will just stand back and wait for the cars to come in to them and to keep things under wraps, ie below the radar.

Forums like these do tend to bring up most of these issues with cars, and that is a good thing for owners!

The car will go in a limp mode and you will get no boost at all.

It didn't start like that for me. It started as an odd mechanical noise that occasionally manifested when "boosting" in third gear and eventually ended up with a really kangaroo ride through town and eventually ended with the cat going into a form of limp mode.

Essentially the issue with mine was the shaft that connects the two turbines had loads of free play that could have ended up with it all shattering and causing a bad time. Thank God modern cars can actually sense this and shut the turbo off before any damage is caused!

When I had a turbo die it made a very loud pop and produced clouds of blue smoke and the sound of a bank balance going through the floor. There was also a dramatic power loss.

Not a VW driver then but the silver lining was that it was cheaper to replace with a specialist hybrid turbo rather than a standard one. The boy racer turbo gave a very significant power boost and amazingly reduced fuel consumption, or was the last bit just what I told my wife?

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but wondering if anyone knew this answer?

I'm thinking of Apr remap and Milltek, however not sure it's worth the risk if a i have the 701t rather then 713j. 66 plate, if anyone can help.

Thanks
