Hi all,

Not new to the forum - largely because I've been doing my research - but this is my first post.

The time's come for me to upgrade my car. I really like the look of the R-Line (have my heart set on the grey, although there are still times I'm tempted by both the black and red) and can't tell you how impressed I was when it came to driving each. It's the most recent facelift versions I'm referring to, by the way. I found both had really comfortable handling, were really quiet, and we're unexpectedly powerful, too.

I'm at the point now where I'm basically just deciding which of the two to go for, so had a few questions I was hoping some of you may be able to answer to help point me in the right direction.

How has everyone who owns either found theirs? I'm swaying towards the 1.0 110 because it was the more powerful of the two, but - and maybe I'm being narrow-minded - I've still the odd concern about it being three cylinder.

And for those who have now done a reasonable amount of mileage, have you had any issues? You'd like to think they'll be fine to start with, but it's as a few miles have been put on cars that things start to arise.

I expect to have to do a fair amount of motorway driving, often late at night. Does it remain comfortable doing these sort of drives, and how is your MPG even if you're putting your foot down on a lengthy journey when the roads are clear?

Finally, how satisfied have you been? I ask this because a) this will be the first Volkswagen I'll have owned, and b) while reading up, I came across several articles that said VW customers are among the least satisfied in recent years, which surprised me.

I'm very pleased of my own, there is no reason why you should avoid tree cylinders. It is newer, it is lighter, it is more 'sensitive' to use because lower friction internally, it is more efficient on fuel.
And last, but not least, it's got better sound and hey, it has bigger 'mugs' than in 1.2!(many forget this fact). And I would consider you narrow minded (you said that, not me) if you don't choose the three cylinder.
It is a wonderful little beast!

I would buy the 1.4 Petrol one. I really love that one

like Eelis I am very pleased with mine, it's pulls well and on tick over you would not know it was a 3 cylinder.
I would happily buy another car with this engine, perhaps this article below would help in your decision (different car but same engine)

I have a 1.0 110 SEL and do 80 miles a day, 5 days a week, 60 of which is motorway (although hilly M5) with my ACC set to 75. I get 48-50mpg out of a tank. It is not a frugal as I would have liked.

The engine is lovely however, and if you are in the right gear it pulls brilliantly!

It does definitely not drive like a 3 cylinder. It is so well balanced it does not require a balancing shaft. It ticks along lovely. Presuming it hasn't put itself to sleep anyway!

Thanks for all the replies so far, gents. All really helpful; the article, too. Largely what I wanted to hear, incidentally. Those of you who've done a fair few miles, have you had any issues so far? Would still like to hear from any 1.2 89 owners, if possible?

Mugs=cylinders (at least in here, Finland).

I've done 4500 miles since 21st September. No issues.

Other than a rattly door card... Which I don't have time/can't be bothered to get sorted (yet)

I've got the 90PS 1.2 TSI in my Fabia. Great little engine. I'm averaging 45mpg (well, I was, but recent cold weather and a lot of ~2 mile journeys have dropped that a touch) and I've had no trouble so far. But I only got it in May! It's not quick but it goes fine for a city car. Perfectly happy with cruising on the motorway too, the engine is very quiet and smooth.
