Polo losing power

Hi there,

I've Had my 05 Reg Mk 5 polo 1.2 for little over a month now. Started having problems with the power of the car but at a similar time the exhaust was blowing. thinking this was causing the power loss I had an inspection and needed middle and rear exhaust sections which are now replaced! This didn't work so I changed my spark plugs putting 3 new NGK in. This made no difference still, so I changed the ignition coils thinking this could be the issue and still no power in the car.

On a flat road or down hill the car is fine however when I try going up hill, even a small hill, there is no power and to the point where first gear wont pull it. Sometimes mid drive my engine will loose all revs and cut out meaning I have to restart the car and it goes again. Lastly, when I put my foot down the rev meter will go to 30 and there will be nothing more past that? All my fluids in the engine are fine, and only have an inspect message on my dash when I start it up but that goes off!

Can anyone help?

I think that you will find that all "drive by wire accelerator" car will not rev beyond a certain limit if the car is not being driven along the road in gear.

My two suggestions are:- (1) the engine timing has slipped/jumped a tooth or two. (2) the engine has burn valve(s)

So, not too good and if I were you I'd stop throwing random parts/money at it and get it seen to professionally, it might cost a bit but you should get a result, so far you have unfortunately been throwing good money away on hunches.

Good Luck!

Edit:- a compression test might tell you a lot.

Rum is right - If in neutral, it wont go past 30 for engine safety. You cant rev these engines like old engines.

That means it's going into limp mode

Have you had it scanned for faults

I think you need to get it scanned. It sounds like it could be a faulty sensor amongst other things

Someone's mentioned a sensor in the exhaust ?? Would tho cause such severe loss of power? Also after reading up on it the throttle body sounds like it could the cause ????

It could do

Without getting it scanned, you'll be clutching at straws. Theres over 50 sensors on this engine and associated parts.

Ah right, will a potable code reader from online do the job instead of paying for a diognostic? And yeah lambda sensor keeps cropping up as a possible issue

It will, but it wont give you the most definitive report

Your local independent garage will probably scan it for less than £20 for you.
