6R - Instrument Cluster Clicking?

Post by matt-t »

Hi Everyone :D

I have just purchased a 2012 Polo TDi as a run about and wanted to rule out a fault.

I have a relay clicking sound coming from behind the instrument cluster, it appears to be when the car is idling.
What ever it is seems to put a lot of demand on the electrical system as there is a noticeable dip in interior lights/headlights when this happens.

Is this common or is there a fault? I have warranty on the vehicle so would rather get any issues resolved now.

Thanks in advance!

there is no relay inside of the instrument cluster. the only ticking is from the indicator, but i'm sure you're able to distinguish it from a relay.

my guess is, it's the auxiliary heating. it switches on below 4 degrees celsius to heat up the aircon quicker.
it draws about 40 amps (500W) so it could dim the lights a bit.

but i'm not 100% sure; this is only a guess. it only comes with the climatic and climatronic. not with manual A/C

Thank you for the reply.

The instrument cluster is the rough location of where it comes from, and it does seem to be in the mornings when cold now you mention it, will check that on my way home (if it get above 4'c today)

I have manual A/C and the click is every 30 seconds or so, if not a little more frequent.

Same thing happens with mine especially when it's cold in the morning, lights dim momentarily, but has stopped by the time I arrive at work. It's nothing that really concerns me at the moment.
