Aftermarket head unit

Hi folks, recently bought a pioneer head unit, cut a long story short I have bought adapters and one I have is a plug and play which makes the stereo stay constant on ? I am led to believe there is not an automatic ignition switch in volkswagens? If that's what it's called . So I'm thinking only other route is to wire the red ignition switch wire directly to the fuse box , has anyone any thoughts on this or have been involved in something similar . Any help and advice is appreciated . Cheers
