Timing belt replacement?

Hi all,

Firstly, apologies if this has been asked elsewhere!

I've got an 11reg 6R GTI with 31k on the clock. It's due a minor service and brake fluid change which is going to set me back around £220.

My question is, does it also need the cambelt/timing belt replacing? According to the VW website it needs changing every 5yrs (mine is 5yrs 8 months old).

However, when i rang them up to book the service I asked what other work was due, they checked the system for my reg and mileage and said it was due a brake fluid change and air filter change. No mention of the timing belt?!

I'm guessing if I mention it they will say it's due to get another £400+ off me! So I'd like to avoid that if it's not actually needed!

Anyone else with a 6R GTI had their timing belt replaced? If so, what age/mileage?

Cheers!
Tom

VW recommend timing belt is due every 5 years for cars registered after September 2009 regardless of mileage. It's every 4 years up to that date. We charge £349 for belt or £399 for belt and water pump.

I don't own a 6R GTi, mine is a 2011 1.6 SEL.

The car has 140,000 miles on the clock and has had two timing belt changes, the first at around 46,000 (in 2012) and the last one at around 139,000 this year.

Why the belt was changed at 46,000 miles I do not know! The water pump was not changed at the time but was replaced at 133,000 at the end of 2015 due to it being defective.

I had timing belt and water pump changed this year as a precaution.
