Hi All,

So I'm sure we all know about the infamous oil usage issues surrounding the 1.4 TSI engine. I know its 2017 now and conversation around this topic has died down (as most people have already moved on from these engines), but me on the other hand, I've recently just bought a used one.

Here's the history of usage so far:

11/06/2017 - bought the car, oil 1 notch from the max level: 26,635 miles
15/07/2017 - a month later, oil level 11 notches from max level, i.e. 2 or 3 from the bottom: 26,850 miles

So its used around a litre in 215 miles (346km). It's probably worth noting I was a little heavy right footed when I first bought it, not sure if that would have increased the rate of consumption.

It's a fantastic car and I love it, and don't really want to get rid of it as I just bought it, but of course the high oil usage does worry me.

I'm trying to figure out what options I have here 6 years after the car was released. It's most definitely out of warranty. Anyone know if VW have to fix this as it was such a widespread issue? Any idea of costs and who I can call up to enquire? Not really sure whether to go to VW directly or dealers etc..

You might get goodwill from the dealer considering this is an acknowledged problem and all gtis with this block should’ve been recalled by now. With such low mileage too I’d say you are in with a chance

Thanks for the reply. I reckon I'll try to fire off an email to a dealer and see what they say.

Although this car has an engine chip and a custom exhaust. Do you think this would hinder my chances of getting it repaired?

I would plead ignorance on the remap. That could cause you issues.

Good luck, once a VW dealer has that car to start the oil consumption check, I'd be amazed if they don't check it out for chipping etc, but what can you do now as you are in this mess now.

Did you go into this ownership with your eyes open about these potential problems, these engines seem to offer a lot, but along with that potentially, while in your ownership, a serious either loss in value or high costs getting them repaired and sold on quickly.

Edit:- with that very low mileage (he says while running an early 2011 Audi S4 currently showing 22K miles), I'd kind of guess that that car has already been in for the first attempt to sort it out - maybe I'm wrong there though.
