Struggling to start

Hi everyone, I currently own a 2003 1.9 TDI Polo Sport and for some reason it doesn't want to start when cold or so I think. What I think the reason is that my immobiliser is starting to run low on battery because sometimes it doesn't want to lock or unlock the car, so I'm thinking that there is some kind of protection if the key is not recognised it won't let me start the car but I don't think that the issue because when the car is warm or warm-ish it doesn't hesitate to start, could it be something else? Any help would be much appreciated.
