Problems with windscreen washers

Since I got my Polo GTI, I've had on & off issues with the windscreen washers. Last winter they worked on & off-I tried pushing a pin in the washer nozzles, but that made no difference and it was the rear as well as the fronts. Then they seemed to be fine until a few weeks back. The windscreen washer ran out, so I filled it up and mostly now, it does not work. Sometimes when I start a journey it might work for a little while, then stop again. Again it is all washers that don't work. Could it be the pump or a blockage at the front somewhere as it affects the fronts and rear washers? It's quite annoying at this time of year as you really need to use it a lot!

It could be the pump. They aren’t overly reliable

Don’t put a pin in the front washer jets as they are a fan jet and not a pin hole jet. You can easily damage the delicate outlet with a pin

Can you hear the pump running when washing the windscreen?

I think sometimes yes and sometimes no-will check again tomorrow. Luckily I do have a new water pump which I got when they played up the last time

Is it just the washer bottle/jets freezing up ?
On a cold morning (ie below 4 deg c) I do not try using washers until at least 1 hour down the road,so as to melt any ice with engine heat, after a really cold night it can take more than an hour to clear.I am only mentioning since you said you had trouble last winter.
I have also replaced spray nozzles before when repeated cleaning has not worked.

The GTI washer jets are heated, so they shouldnt freeze up (and if they do, they thaw almost immediately on starting the engine)

The bottle could still freeze up though Alex - and of course one could have elec failure to the spray nozzles : )

Oh of course, but thats down to making sure there is ample screenwash additive so you are covered to say -10 or whatever the necessary ambient it where you live :)

And yes, the jets are known to have heater failure

Mostly it hasn't been cold enough for anything to freeze. Also sometimes they did work once or twice, then just stopped again. Can't really wait to use them for an hour as I will be at work on morning journeys or back home by then in evening journeys and too late! Lol!
