Cracked valves

Hi

This is my first post and hopefully in the right place... I have a VW Polo E55 1.2 on a 2007 plate and have had it in garage where they
have diagnosed cracked valves in cylinder 1 and 3.

So my question on which I can't decide is at a repair cost of £1077 is it worth spending this much money on a car which is probably only
worth £1500 maybe less... Or should I sell it for spares and repairs and buy another car

Thanks in advance - James

That seems like a steep bill for head work like that. Valves aren’t an overly difficult job.

What’s the split on parts and labour?

Hi Alex

Thanks for your reply... I'm not sure of the labour/parts split on cost, but I will find out tomorrow
but I have already decided not to go ahead as I feel that it's not worth spending over £1000 on a car
worth less than £1500.

I'm also annoyed as I drove the car to them, it was still driving fine and their now telling me that
when they put it back together it will no longer be driveable....

How? Is that normal? I'm NOT a mechanic so I can't comprehend how it won't be driveable if they replace
everything as it was when they received the car?

So now I have additional cost of getting it towed! Fed up to say the least :(

They have an obligation to put it back to the condition it was in when they received it if you choose not to go ahead with the work. They can’t just leave it in pieces. That’s downright unacceptable

Well I asked them to make it ready ( and driveable ) for collection, and they said making
it driveable again is not possible ( without explaining why? )

As a layman and NOT a mechanic it is incomprehensible to me why this is not possible!

The only reason I can think of is the ( Cracked! ) valves fell out in bits when they removed
the head and to make it driveable would require them to fit new valves as re-fitting the
cracked valves would be impossible... but who knows?

Put your request in writing to the manager, and refer to trading standards or their motor trade association.
